Let’s talk about the silver elephant in the
room – going grey.
Whether you’re 40, 52 (like me!), or well into your fabulous 60s, at some point, you’ve stood infront of the mirror, tugged at that rogue silver strand, and thought, Should I just go grey already?Or maybe you are like me and there is no rogue silver strand of hair but a skunk line right in thefront for all to see. Every couple of weeks, I wake up, mutter to myself, “Not today, Satan!” andrush off to the salon.
I get it. Going grey isn’t just about hair. It’s about identity, confidence, and embracing (or
resisting) change. So how do you know when it’s time to take the plunge? Or if you even want
to?
Let’s break it down and decide together.
There’s no “right” age to go grey. Some women start in their 30s and rock it. Others dye until 70 and don’t miss a beat. Me? I started seeing wiry little strands sneak in during my mid 40s and made peace with them in my 50s. Kind of.
Ask yourself:
● Are you tired of the upkeep?
● Is your current color making you feel fresh or are you getting tired of it?
● Do you want a softer, more natural look or are you still feeling that bold, vibrant vibe?
Remember, going grey isn’t giving up. It’s a style choice just like bold lipstick or a fresh pair of statement earrings. There are so many chic and stylish women rocking their grey hair these days! Their grey hair confidence is strong.
Let’s not pretend it’s as simple as “just stop dyeing it.” There’s a transition process, and it’s a journey, sister.
Consider this:
● Your hair health: Years of dyeing can take a toll. Grey can feel like a reset for your strands.
● Your skin tone: Grey hair can change how certain colors flatter you. You might need to adjust your makeup and wardrobe (new excuse to shop!).
● Your confidence level: Will you feel empowered and authentic or invisible and older?
● Your lifestyle: Can you stand the awkward grow-out phase, or do you need a more gradual shift?
Spoiler alert: You can go grey with grace AND sass. I promise.
If you’ve decided to ditch the dye, here’s what to expect and how to survive it with style:
Stage 1: The Spark of Rebellion You’ve had one too many root touch-ups. You scroll Pinterest for “chic silver hairstyles” and dream of a color-free life. This has been my current phase for the past month.
Stage 2: The Awkward Middle School Phase (can you tell I’m a teacher?) This is the root line limbo. The “Is she growing it out or just busy?” phase. Wear a lot of hats. Or make friends with your stylist and try:
● Root blending
● Highlights/lowlights
● A big chop (bold but freeing)
Stage 3: The Grey Awakening
You start seeing the silver pattern emerge. And guess what? It’s kinda fabulous. Strangers
compliment you. You feel lighter and not just because you saved $150 at the salon.
Stage 4: Full Silver Siren Mode
You made it. You’re a 100% silver fox. You walk into rooms like a queen and rock metallic
accessories like it’s your superpower.
Going grey is deeply personal. There’s no shame in dyeing forever or embracing grey at 40. The only “right” decision is the one that feels like you.
Me? I’m still flirting with the idea. Some days I’m all in. Other days, I see too much grey coming in and grab my phone and book my salon appointment. And that’s okay. We’re allowed to change our minds. We’re allowed to evolve.
So whether you’re a bottle brunette, a platinum devotee, or ready to embrace your natural sparkle, own it.
Just promise me one thing: whatever you choose, do it because it makes you feel fabulous, not because someone told you to “age gracefully.”
Because girl, we don’t just age, we evolve. And silver might just be our new superpower.
