Hot Flash Summer: 8 Cool Ways Women Over 50 Can Thrive in the Heat (and in Life)

Hot girl summer? Please. It’s hot flash summer over here. When I was younger, I thrived in summer. I spent most of it outdoors soaking up every ounce of sun I could get. That’s not the case anymore. Although I still enjoy the outdoors, I can no longer handle the heat like I used to. Now, I prefer the early morning breeze or cooler evenings on my patio. They are much more hot flash friendly. And that’s ok. I still love summer and the slower pace it brings, hot flashes and all.

Whether you’re dealing with menopause, navigating big life changes, or simply trying to stay cool in every sense of the word, here are 8 ways to thrive, not just survive, this summer heat.

Dress in Chill Mode

Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics like bamboo, cotton, or linen. Bonus points for clothes that double as stylish and pajama-level comfy. Loose fit clothing keeps you cool and confident.

Sip in Style

Staying hydrated is crucial in this heat. Try adding slices of cucumber, mint, or citrus to your water for a spa-like feel. Iced herbal teas like hibiscus or peppermint also help cool you from the inside out.

Fan Girl It

Handheld mini fans are not just for influencers. They’re for smart women who know that a little breeze can save the day (and your mindset). Keep one in your purse for instant relief.

Embrace the Shade (Literally and Figuratively)

Stylish sun hats. Oversized sunglasses. A good patio umbrella. These will help you stay looking and feeling cool while avoiding looking like a hot mess express. A win-win.

Practice "Cool" Movement

Swap the sweaty gym for a cool morning walk. Try an afternoon swim or practice yoga (in the A/C). You’ll still move your body, but in a way that respects your energy and the heat.

Keep Your Cool Mentally, Too

As we age, summers can feel overwhelming, especially when your body is doing its own thing. Daily mindfulness, meditation, or just a good journal session can do wonders for your mental clarity.

Chill With Your Circle

Surround yourself with friends – others who are in the same stage of life as you who get it. Early morning coffee dates, afternoons by the pool, or lunch and shopping trips are all great things to do during the summer months. We rise better together.

Celebrate YOU

You’re not “too old” for a summer glow-up. In fact, you’re at the age where you know exactly what you want and what truly matters most. So get up. Get dressed. Put on that lipstick. Book the weekend trip. Dance in the kitchen. Hot flashes and all.
Summers may be hot but they can also be amazing. It’s about staying cool while standing bold. You’ve got the wisdom and the power. Now, grab a portable fan and get out there and thrive!
